Ferguson Ridge is the epitome of a community ski resort. Located in the Wallowa-Whitman Mountain in the Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area, "Fergi" as locals call it, is 334 miles away from Portland, Oregon. The small town of Joseph is the closest community nearby.
In order to reach Ferguson Ridge, first you must figure out if the mountain is open. How do you do that? Well, you could call but that would ruin the fun…do it as the locals do and pass by the a-frame signs that say "FERGI'S OPEN" in capital letters. Ferguson Ridge is run 100% by volunteers and a valid sno-park pass is required for all vehicles to enter the area. Contact the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles or Outlaw Motor Sports to purchase.
Trails of varying levels of difficulty run over the 170 acres. Bring your own equipment, or rent in town as no rentals are available here. There are seven marked trails serviced by two lifts. The summit elevation reaches 5,800 feet and the vertical drop comes in at 600 feet with an average snowfall of 40 inches. The terrain is varied from semi-groomed trails, to natural, tree, and glade skiing. There is a small terrain park which includes ramps, rails, and a halfpipe.
When your day is through, stop in and lounge on the amazing wooden sundeck and grab some lunch and drinks, while soaking up the views and reviewing the trails you conquered, sipping at your drinks as the sunset fades away.
