From the desert-like countryside of Hells Canyon to the alpine vegetation of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Seven Devils Mountains, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest is brimming with natural beauty. There are actually two forests within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest: the wild, untamed northern section, which is ideal for car, tent and horseback, and the southern section, which provides a milder, predictable forest experience, and is suitable for RV and motorhome camping enthusiasts. All visitors will enjoy the great views from the popular Hells Canyon Scenic Byway and the Imnaha River Loop, Elkhorn Drive, and Snake River-Mormon Basin Back Country Byway are great choices for unforgettable auto tours. Even history lovers will be satisfied at Wallowa-Whitman national Forest, with places like Sumpter, and its Historic Railroad and Dredge, the semi-ghost town of Granite with its weathered buildings and dirt roads, and Haines, a rough and ready old West town, which are all situated along the route at Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.
