Situated in south central Idaho, Sawtooth National Forest extends into Utah, encompassing not only glacial mountain peaks, such as 12,076 foot Hyndman Peak, but also the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake. The natural beauty here is rugged and raw, such that even Ernest Hemingway asked to make Sawtooth his final resting place. The National Forest encompasses 2.1 million acres of the wildest and most magnificent country in the U.S. and is home to 1,100 lakes and over 3,000 miles of rivers and streams, making the choices for outdoor activities literally endless. Hiking, camping, boating, mountaineering, mountain biking, horseback riding, sight seeing and photography are just the beginning.
The waters at Sawtooth National Forest, brimming with salmon, steelhead tease anglers and native trout, are great for fishing trips,rafting and kayaking. Skiers are familiar with Sun Valley, where they can enjoy downhill skiing at four developed winter sports areas that provide some of the finest snow conditions. Snowmobiling is also popular at Sawtooth National Forest with marked and groomed trails and warming huts available. In the spring, visitors can enjoy snow-capped mountain peaks, rushing streams and meadows carpeted with hundreds of varieties of wildflowers.
To get to Sawtooth National Forest from Twin Falls, travel about 75 miles north on State highway 75 until you reach the forest.
