Things to do / Travel Guide
Visit the deepest river gorge in North America. With scenic vistas, spectacular mountain peaks, abundant wildlife and the rustic remains of early miners and settlers, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area has something for everyone. .
With almost 900 miles of trails, visitors to Hells Canyon National Recreation Area can hike from the highest peak of the Seven Devils Mountain range at 9,393 feet down through alpine meadows and lakes to a desert-like environment. The Canyon itself measures 6,000 feet deep and 10 miles wide and is home to elk, bear, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and many other species of birds and animals. The barren, steep slopes of the Seven Devils Mountain break over into the Snake River canyon at lower elevations. The varying elevations of the mountain range create diversity in both the plant and wildlife communities, which boast peregrine falcons, prickly pear cacti, poison ivy, and rattlesnakes. In addition to the largest free-roaming elk herd in the United States, Hells Canyon is home to bighorn sheep, deer, mountain goats, and the chukar partridge, as well as old-growth ponderosa pine, Engelmann spruce, western larch, and Douglas fir, so don't miss this awesome opportunity for unforgettable outdoor adventure. .
