Explore rugged wilderness, rushing whitewater and look out for abundant wildlife at Clearwater National Forest!
The deep canyon ridges in Clearwater National Forest have served as travel corridors across the mountains for hundreds of years and were once used by the Nez Perce Indians and on the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition. Today, the rugged Clearwater National Forest is home to clean rivers, massive wilderness and some of the most important history of the American West. The forest is filled with opportunities for outdoor activity and enjoyment, including camping, hiking, backpacking, rafting and horseback riding. In the wintertime, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are a dream in Clearwater National Forest's 1.8 million acres, which are an endless and magnificent landscape of mountains to the east and prairies to the west.
Visitors to Clearwater National Forest are invited to enjoy incredible fishing and whitewater rapids, as well as wildlife watching for elk, moose, whitetail and mule deer, black bear, gray wolf, cougar, mountain goats and many smaller mammals. Located in northern Idaho, the Forest is headquartered in Orofino, Idaho and divided into three administrative units with ranger district offices in Potlatch, Kooskia and Orofino.
