With 2,265,000 acres of mountainous landscape, the Boise National Forest offers endless year-round recreation opportunities for the whole family. Visitors will find over 70 campgrounds and picnic areas and are invited to hike, horseback ride and motorbike on over 850 miles of trails. Trout fishing is popular here on over 7,600 miles of streams, as is fishing for oceangoing salmon and steelhead which inhabit tributaries of the Salmon River. The 250 lakes and reservoirs offer rafting, kayaking, sailing and water-skiing. Winter sport enthusiasts can enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing on regularly groomed trails. Conifer forest covers most of the Boise National Forest, which includes ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, grand fir, western larch and whitebark pine. With colorful wildflowers and wildlife such as mule deer and Rocky Mountain elk, Boise National Forest promises a memorable adventure!
The Boise National Forest is located in west central Idaho, north, east and southeast of Boise. Interstate 84 runs through Boise and near the south end of the Forest. State Highway 55 runs along the west side of the Forest.
