Things to do / Travel Guide
It is important to make a distinction between this region's mountainous areas and lower-lying areas. The Central Idaho region is predominantly arid, though conditions are wetter in the mountains. Temperatures get extremely cold in the high Rocky Mountains near the state's eastern border with Montana, where snow blankets the ground throughout the winter. These mountains, however, act to block icy blasts of Arctic air from the north from reaching the flatter areas of the region. Simultaneously, the warm and moisture-laden Chinook winds blow into the region from the west, helping temperatures inch up a bit in the flatlands.
In the winter, the region reluctantly greets heavy rainstorms and cloudy weather, but daytime temperatures are seldom below freezing snowfall is relatively light. During spring, days are dry with warm to mild weather at lower elevations, whereas at higher elevations it remains cold and windy. The arid summers feature hot days and cool nights, with occasional brief thunderstorms in the afternoons. Falls have mild to cold weather with snowfalls early in the season.
