By Plane
The easiest way to get to the central Idaho region is by flying directly into the Boise Air Terminal (BOI). Several national airlines serve this regional airport. Another option is to fly into Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and then drive or take a bus to Boise, which should add approximately 5 hours to your total travel time.
By Car
There is one Interstate which runs through the central Idaho region, the I-84. I-84 goes past Boise, and then leads northwest into Oregon, eventually hitting Portland. In the other direction it connects to I-15 and goes to Salt Lake City, Utah, and points further north.
The following are approximate distances and driving times to the more popular destinations in the central Idaho region from major destinations outside the region:
- Salt Lake City: Boise - 340 miles, 4 hours 45 minutes; Hells Canyon - 540 miles, 10 hours
- Portland: Boise - 430 miles, 6 hours 30 minutes; Hells Canyon - 480 miles, 9 hours
- Butte, Montana: Boise - 480 miles, 6 hours 30 minutes; Hells Canyon - 340 miles, 6 hours 40 minutes
By Bus
Greyhound bus service runs routes from Salt Lake City, Utah through Twin Falls and Boise. There is also a route to Boise from Portland, Oregon.
By Train
There is no direct train access to this region, but it is possible to take Amtrak to Sandpoint in the northern part of the state. The Empire Builder line runs daily, with Sandpoint being approximately two hours from Spokane, Washington and nine hours from Shelby, Montana. From Sandpoint, you'll have to drive south for a few hours along State Road 95 to reach the central Idaho region.
