Although there are many fun activities to choose from at Wekiwa Springs, the main attraction at here is probably the spring itself, where there is a small 15- to 20-foot deep cavern at its source, the cavern itself extending into a cave. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling, canoeing, and fishing as well as hiking on any of the 13.5 miles of trails. The parks is home to deer, bobcats, and black bears, and those exploring the wilderness areas should keep their eyes peeled for a chance encounter! The nature center, which was recently renovated, teaches nature-lovers all about native wildlife and their habitats. Those feeling really adventurous should check out the primitive camping at Camp Cozy, where peaceful seclusion is the name of the game.
From Wekiwa Springs State Park - Apopka, Florida:
Located at the headwaters of the Wekiva River, the beautiful vistas within this park offer a glimpse of what Central Florida looked like when Timucuan Indians fished and hunted these lands. Just one hour from most central Florida attractions, Wekiwa Springs offers visitors the opportunity to relax in a natural setting, enjoy a picnic, or take a swim in the cool spring. Canoeists and kayakers can paddle along the Wekiva River and Rock Springs Run. Thirteen miles of trails provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Options for camping include a full facility campground and primitive camping areas. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. For information about rentals, call (407) 884 4311.
