Things to do / Travel Guide
Stroll through towering palms, live oaks, and scrubby sand pines. The Ocala National Forest is the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi, and filled with opportunities for outdoor adventure!
Ocala National Forest's scenic lakes were originally formed when limestone bedrock dissolved permitting the surface layer to slump and fill with water. Today, Ocala offers a variety of land and water-based recreation, year-round, thanks to its warm and accommodating climate. In addition to boasting the world's largest continuous sand pine scrub of its type, Ocala's huge springs, twisting streams, and lakes are great for fishing and water-skiing. Visitors are invited to take a dip in the cool crystal-clear water of the springs, or snorkel for an underwater view of fish, vegetation and cavernous springs. Those who prefer hiking can enjoy wandering the rolling hills in the pine forest, vast prairies, and wooden boardwalks, through swamps and thick scrub. The Florida National Scenic Trail meanders for 67 miles through the National Forest, making it an excellent choice for back-packing, or off highway vehicle riding. Those who want to spend the night at Ocala, can choose from primitive and dispersed tent camping - the mild winters here are fine for family camping. With all of this, it's no surprise that Ocala National Forest is one of the most popular National Forests in the US!
