The museum houses three permanent collections as well as changing galleries.

The American Art Collection consists of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures from the 18th century to the present. On display are works by John Singer Sargent, Thomas Moran, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Morris Louis, John Chamberlain and Dennis Oppenheim, to name just a few.

The Art of the Ancient Americas Collection contains ceramic, jade, stone, cloth, gold and silver artifacts from more than 30 different cultural groups dating from 2000 BCE to 1521 CE. Major cultures represented in the collection include the Anasazi and Mogollon of the Southwestern United States; the Colima, Aztec and Zapotec of Mexico; the Diquis and Nicoya of Costa Rica; the Verguas of Panama; and the Inca, Monche and Nazca of Peru.

The African Art Collection features ceremonial and utilitarian artifacts as well as objects of personal adornment including intricate beadwork, wooden figures, masks, metal works, carved ivory and ceramics. The artifacts come from several different regions of the African continent including works by the Zulu, Xhosa, Thembu and Ndebele of southern Africa, the Yoruba, Baule and Dogon of western Africa and several works from Cameroon.
