3…2…1…Blast off!…to the Kennedy Space Center, one of the most exciting science locations in the country. There's something for everybody at this thrilling monument to Mankind's final frontier.
The Kennedy Space Center was established in 1963, and later renamed to honor the President who spearheaded our nation's efforts to put a man on the moon. The Space Center is located on a large island off the coast of Florida eight times the size of Manhattan! Your first stop should be the visitor center where you'll be able to meet real life astronauts, stroll through the rocket garden, where some of the first rockets used to carry men into space now rest, and enjoy an informative show at one of the two IMAX theaters there! If you call ahead, you can sit in on NASA's interesting "Lunch with an Astronaut" program.
If you go on a scheduled launch day (highly recommended), you can observe the launch from the LC-39 observation gantry. Be sure to bring your camera! Even on a day without a scheduled launch, it's still a worthwhile stop for the breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of the entire center.
There are three guided tour tracks to take at the center, each tailored to a unique audience and focusing on a different aspect of the center. The Kennedy Space Center tour departs daily every fifteen minutes and is included in the admission price. This tour includes the International Space Station center, the observation gantry, and the Apollo/Saturn V center. The NASA Up Close tour is a very informative tour of the Space Center's industrial area, and the closest possible view of the Space Shuttle launch pads. Also included in the tour is the Shuttle Landing Facility, NASA's huge Crawler Transporters , and the enormous Vehicle Assembly Building.
Don't miss out on the Cape Canaveral Then and Now tour where you'll get the scoop on the exciting history of manned space travel, and the thrilling details of how we won the space race. This tour includes the Air Force Space & Missile Museum, the launch complex where Alan Shepard became the first American in space, as well as Apollo Launch Pad 34, site of the tragic fire that killed the three astronauts of the Apollo 1 mission. Don't forget to call in advance, because these tours sell out daily!
