Take a trip back in time along the Tampa area Manatee River, where Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto landed in 1539. The De Soto National Memorial commemorates De Soto's heroic expedition and the measure he took toward the founding of Florida.
When Hernando de Soto splashed ashore at Tampa Bay, in the 16th century, determined to capture the riches of La Florida, the Spanish conquistador and his troops were both ushered in with mixed sentiments by Native American tribes throughout what is now the Southeastern United States. Today, the De Soto Memorial includes a restoration of the original campsite and a scenic nature trail that circles a mangrove jungle and leads to the ruins of one of the first settlements in the area. Visitors can start off by watching the 21 minute film about the De Soto Expedition and from December to March, enjoy living history demonstrations with 16th century costumes and portrayals of the early settlers' ways of life, including cooking and the firing of an arquebus—a great exhibition for the entire family to enjoy! The Nature Trail winds along the shoreline through several ecosystems, including a mangrove forest similar to the one that De Soto's men would have encountered when they landed almost 500 years ago. Nature lovers will enjoy the seasonal migration of birds here and the several small beaches that are located within the park. While you're at the De Soto National Memorial, you should definitely try out some fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Kids will definitely love the stunning displays of historic armor, weapons, and related period items—and can even try on real helmets and armor!
It's easy to get to De Soto National Memorial. From I-75 take exit 220 west (State Road 64) for about twelve miles. When you get to 75th Street West, turn right and keep going until you hit the park, about 2½ miles ahead. Feel like an explorer yourself as you conquer the beautiful land in this historic area—have fun!
