Society and Culture in Orlando, Tampa and Central Florida

Things to do / Travel Guide

According to the 2000 census figures, there are approximately 2.5 million residents in the Tampa Bay Metro area, 1.5 million in the Orlando Metro area, and just over half a million in the Sarasota Metro area.

The vast majority of Central Florida's residents are Caucasian and English-speaking. There is a large African American community in parts of the region, especially around Tampa and Orlando. Additionally, there is also a historic Latin American presence in the Tampa area.

Senior citizens constitute a major demographic in most of the Central Florida region, particularly in the Sarasota area. The greater Orlando area, on the other hand, which has been growing almost nonstop since the mid-1970s, has a large percentage of families with children. Many residents of the Central Florida region used to live in other areas in the U.S., particularly New York.

Central Florida's population is large and somewhat diverse, being more mixed in the urban areas of Tampa and Orlando. Otherwise, the residents are mostly Caucasian, with sizeable African American and Latin American communities. The locals tend to be older in the Cape Canaveral and Sarasota areas. Outside of the cities, the scene is pretty quiet and reserved.

Most of the locals outside of Orlando and Tampa are conservative in their lifestyle. This is especially true of Sarasota-area residents. Outdoor recreational and water activities are popular among the locals. Families with kids will frequent the theme parks mostly during off-season, especially as they can get discounted tickets as Florida residents.

As the areas around the Kennedy Space Center, Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, and Kissimmee see millions of tourists throughout the year, realize that most people you see on the streets are probably tourists, just like you.
