Scuba Diving in Tampa, Cape Canaveral and Central Florida

Things to do / Travel Guide

Scuba Diving around Cape Canaveral, Florida

The Cape Canaveral area has some limited beach-access diving opportunities, including at Melbourne Beach and Cocoa Beach. This area features shipwrecks, many natural ledges, lobsters, and good spear fishing opportunities. A local area operator offers diving trips and charters.

Scuba Diving around Tampa Bay, Florida

The Tampa Bay area offers many diving sites, accessible by boat, thanks to an established artificial reef program of sinking boats and other objects here. There are many dive shops to rent equipment from and from which to arrange diving charters, which tend to be somewhat pricey.
A major activity that accompanies diving in this area is spear fishing. With regularly warm weather, diving in Central Florida is a year-round activity. Below are some featured diving sites.
  • Sheridan Shipwreck - one of the most popular dive sites in the area, with lots of sea life including grouper, barracuda, and many other fish; an excellent underwater photo spot, with safe interiors to explore for advanced divers (50-80 feet depth)
  • Blackthorn Shipwreck - a large amount of sea life, including grouper, snapper, mackerel and spadefish (65-80 feet depth)
  • Gunsmoke Shipwreck - about 20 miles offshore (70-80 feet depth)
