Space Shuttle Launches from Kennedy Space Center
If you happen to be in Central Florida at the right time, you can witness a launch in person at the Kennedy Space Center. More information is available from NASA's website. As there are sometimes launch delays, it is recommended that you call NASA at (321) 449-4444 one day in advance of any particular launch. Note that getting the best view of the launch site may require arranging tickets months in advance; however, you can also experience the event from any nearby beach. You might even be able to see a space shuttle launch from Orlando - choose an open area or a high building. In Disney World, the observation deck of the Contemporary Resort is a good spot.
Dodecanese Boulevard
Dodecanese Boulevard in Tarpon Springs, off the Gulf Coast, is the main commercial strip of a vibrant Greek community. Along the boulevard, you will see many places selling natural sponges (the kind from the bottom of the sea, not the little square or round synthetic kind), representing the active sponge industry that began to flourish here upon the arrival of Greek sponge divers to the area in 1905. Near the bay, you can witness actual working sponge boats and take short rides aboard them, where you can learn more about sponge harvesting. In addition to the Tarpon Springs sponge industry, you can also find plenty of Greek food stores and other culture related places along Dodecanese Boulevard.
Horseback Riding near Sarasota, Florida
Royal Lipizzan Stallion Ranch in Myakka City, east of Sarasota, serves as the training grounds and stables for the magnificent Royal Lipizzan stallions. These white horses perform amazing jumping and military maneuvers and exhibit behaviors that originate from their centuries of history as battle horses. Ancestors of the stallions at this ranch were brought here from Europe after their rescue during World War II. Horse-training shows, open to public viewing, are held from January-March.
