Things to do / Travel Guide

There are a couple of pleasant scenic routes worth driving in the Central Florida region, one on the Atlantic Coast and the other on the Gulf Coast.

The Cape Canaveral area, on Central Florida's Atlantic Coast, features some interesting sights, which can be seen along a 30-mile circular route. From the Bee Line Expressway heading east, take State Road 528 to U.S. Highway 1. Head south into Cocoa, and then east on State Road 520 across the Indian River into Merritt Island. Continue east to Cape Canaveral, then south along the oceanfront on State Road A1A through Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach. From there, head west on U.S. Highway 192 back across the Indian River and through Melbourne until you hit the I-95. This route affords you several views of the Indian River and a long-lasting gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the chance to explore two of the area's towns.

On the Gulf Coast, there is a beautiful 70-mile-long scenic drive that goes around Tampa Bay. Take the I-4 west into downtown Tampa, and switch to the I-275 west across the bay on the Frankland Bridge. Pass by St. Petersburg and continue on until you will get to the stunning Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which will take you back east across the bay. Then head north on the Tamiami Trail along the coast of the bay, back into Tampa. On this route, you will be able to see much of Tampa and St. Petersburg. The view of and from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, including Fort DeSoto Park to the west of the bridge, is unique and fantastic. The drive on the Tamiami Trail lets you explore some smaller towns along the bay front.
