Things to do / Travel Guide
There is plenty of fishing available in the Central Florida region. Not only do you have both freshwater and saltwater fishing, but there are also plenty of waterfront fishing sites, and boat-access fishing is available, which, can make for a great fishing trip.
Fishing around Cape Canaveral Area (Space Coast)
Both deep-sea and sport fishing opportunities are somewhat limited in this area of the Central Florida region. Although some fishing charters are available, they can be quite costly, easily costing a few hundred dollars per day. In the Cape Canaveral area you can try to catch grouper, snapper, tuna, and sailfish.
Fishing around Orlando, Florida
In the urban and suburban Orlando area you will find many freshwater lakes to fish in. All fishing here is done from the lake shores. Depending on the lake you visit, you'll have the opportunity to catch a variety of different fish. Guided fishing expeditions are also available.
- Lake Santiago in Demetree Park - mostly catfish and largemouth bass
- Bear Creek Recreational Complex - catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, and sunfish
- Barnett Park Frog Pond - catfish, largemouth bass, and bluegill
- Lake Island Park in Winter Park - mostly catfish
More detailed information, including local regulations, is available for the above-named fishing sites, as well as other fishing sites in the Orlando area.
Fishing around Tampa Bay and Sarasota, Florida
There are many fishing charters in the Tampa Bay and Sarasota areas that can take you out into the Gulf of Mexico for sport fishing or that stop at one of the many artificial reefs in this area. Here, you can catch grouper, snapper, mackerel, cobia, amberjack, and barracuda. Fishing charters operate out of the many marinas in this area, but are very expensive. You can usually keep the fish you catch, subject to government regulations.
Another great way to fish, or just observe fishing, in this area is from one of the numerous fishing piers. One of the most famous and enjoyable places is The Pier in St. Petersburg. For a list of fishing piers in the area, check out the Tampa Bay Angler.
