Family Vacation Ideas for Orlando, Tampa and Central Florida

Things to do / Travel Guide

Orlando Family Vacation Spots

If there is any place that is literally a kid's kingdom, it is Central Florida. In the Orlando area, the kids aren't just along for the ride, they are the major customers! The major attractions in the region for kids are, of course, the famous theme parks, especially Disney World and Universal Studios.

Disney Family Vacation Ideas

While on vacation in Disney World or the other theme parks, one of the more enjoyable experiences for kids is meeting the characters and having their pictures taken with them. Characters appear at specific places and times in each theme park, so make sure to obtain a schedule from Guest Services.
As kids can sometimes get obsessed with the idea of meeting their favorite characters, perhaps planning a character meal will satisfy them. Other ways kids like to be entertained is by collecting character signatures in autograph books, and “country” stamps in their Epcot Center passports.

There is no better way to exhaust a kid than to spend a day at a theme park. Much has been written on how to best enjoy the parks with children. Other than common sense and knowing your children's limits, here are a few helpful ideas:
  • Get an early start, before the lines and the heat take full effect. If you stay in a Disney property, you'll have access to the park before it opens to the general public.
  • Schedule an “off day” where instead of going to a theme park, you just relax in your hotel by the pool. A nice break of this sort should serve to recharge everyone's batteries and will also save you a significant amount of money.
  • Consider taking a mid-day break back at your hotel, if you are staying close by. Some “down time” will refresh the family for an exciting evening.
  • Buy passes that allow you and your family to visit multiple parks in one day. That way, kids can select their favorite rides and attractions in each. Going to a second theme park in the middle of the day is very likely to reenergize the kids.

Kennedy Space Center for Families

If you only have time to go to one other attraction besides the theme parks, try to make it to the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. This is an excellent attraction for children, as it is exciting, fun, historic, and educational. There is a moderately priced admission fee to enter the visitor's center and take the tour of this government complex.

Central Florida Vacation Ideas

A nice place to take your children if you're staying in Kissimmee is Old Town, on U.S. Highway 192. This shopping and entertainment complex is quaint and enjoyable, and it also features carnival rides, so both you and your children will enjoy it.

When dining, be aware that the non-fast-food places usually offer special kids meals, as well as coloring books and crayons to help keep your children busy.
