Our Tourist Attractions Expert Says:

Take a trip to the Far East in the oldest Chinatown in North America! From cheap and tasty meals to live entertainment and great deals, Chinatown is filled with surprises for all ages that are sure to please.
Established in the 1850s, San Francisco's Chinatown is splattered all over popular culture including film, music and literature. One of the largest and most prominent centers of Chinese activity outside of China, Chinatown is one of San Francisco's top tourist attractions and draws more visitors than the Golden Gate Bridge. Lots of fun in this neighborhood surrounds the experience of food (although some of the pungent smells and sights of slaughter may be unpleasant to some) from the authentic markets to ample and inexpensive restaurants. After your delicious meal (or 2), you may even want to purchase some imported wares to lug home. <
Wandering the streets here is great fun, especially on Grant Avenue, which has plenty of those cheap, plastic Buddhas to take home as souvenirs, if that's your cup of tea. After you walk through the famous Chinatown Gate, unveiled in 1970, the elaborate 1920s streetlights which resemble golden dragons are a favorite of youngsters and adults alike.
