Our Sports Superfan Says:
Willie Mays, Joe Montana, The Beatles, Richard Nixon and the Loma Prieta Earthquake all made history in this 1960-era stadium, currently home to the San Francisco 49'ers. The 49'ers created a football dynasty at Candlestick, with five Super Bowl victories between 1981 and 1994. Loyal fans attend games hoping that this is the year the San Francisco 49'er will return to the Super Bowl, or at least soundly beat the Oakland Raiders.
The San Francisco Giants played here for 40 windy and cold years before moving to AT&T Park. Willie Mays, the "Say Hey Kid" provided Bay Area residents with some of the finest baseball ever played. Richard Nixon "opened" Candlestick Park by throwing out the opening pitch in 1960 and the Beatles final concert was at The Stick in August, 1966.
Sports fans attending the 1989 World Series may owe their lives to the stadium designers. The 7.1 intensity Loma Prieta Earthquake struck a packed stadium. There were no injuries, just some shaky minutes on network TV from San Francisco.
