Our Sports Superfan Says:
Spyglass Hill Golf Course has consistently been named one of the top public courses in the country. It would stand out as a great course due to its difficulty and aesthetics alone. However, it also stands out as part of the rotation for February's AT&T National Pro-Am tournament. In the tournament's round-robin format, everyone plays at one of three courses in the first three rounds of the event, including Spyglass Hill. Located in the Del on the Monterrey Peninsula, near the Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill is a par-72 course designed by the famed Robert Trent Jones.
The course opened in 1966, and became part of the Pebble Beach tournament rotation the following year. Its name comes from the Robert Louis Stevenson classic "Treasure Island." Legend has it that the author wandered the area thinking of ideas, and each hole is named for a character in the book.
The course, which is available (for a hefty fee) for anyone to play, is located in Pebble Beach, California, just outside of Monterrey, and 130 miles south of San Francisco.
