Our Sports Superfan Says:

One of the most famous golf courses in the world, and arguably the best public course out there, Pebble Beach Golf Links is a premier destination for golf player and fan alike. The beautiful seaside course has a famous annual tournament, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a tournament features celebrities and great golfers alike. It also hosts another senior tour tournament later in the year. It has also hosted a PGA Championship and four U.S. Opens, with a fifth scheduled to take place here in 2010.

Opening in 1919, the Jack Neville and Douglas Grant designed 6,828-yard course has been holding professional tournaments since 1926. Famed entertainer Bing Crosby brought his annual pro-am tournament here in 1947, and it has been held at Pebble Beach and surrounding courses ever since. It is also one of the courses in the current U.S. Open rotation, having hosted the tournament in 1972, 1982, 1992, and 2000, with the 2010 tournament scheduled to be the next to take place here. All four Opens at Pebble have been won by big names: Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, and Tiger Woods. In 2000, Woods obliterated the field, tying a U.S. Open record by shooting 12 under par, and winning by a major tournament-record 15 shots.

The course is laid out in a figure eight, so that as many holes as possible on the par-72 links are along the Pacific Ocean. It was named the best public course in the United States in 2007, and was the first public course to be named the best golf course in America (by Golf Digest in 2001). Although it is technically open to anyone, great demand to play the course has driven rates up to as much as $475 for a tee time, with a $25 cart fee.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is on the grounds of the Pebble Beach Resorts complex, in Pebble Beach, California. It is situated about 125 miles south of the San Francisco Bay Area.
