Mt. Diablo State Park - California

Things to do / Travel Guide

Our Nature Nut Says:

With incredible San Francisco Bay Area vistas, beautiful wildflowers, diverse wildlife and distinctive rock formations, Mt. Diablo State Park truly is a California natural treasure.

The 3,849 foot Mt. Diablo never fails to astound visitors, with its fantastic views of 35 California counties. You can hike or bike ride to the mountain's summit and stargaze from telescopes mounted on the observation deck which provide some of the finest views, (especially after a winter storm), or you can explore the more remote trails by horseback. The park's Summit Museum, located in the historic stone building atop the highest peak of Mt. Diablo and the Visitor Center highlights the cultural and natural history of the park and houses a variety of exhibits. For those who like natural history, the walk up the circular stairway to the observation deck at the Visitor Center gives visitors a look at ancient marine fossils embedded in the sandstone walls of the summit building. Should you want to spend the night, Mount Diablo State Park has three designated family camping areas and five group camps to choose from.

Mt. Diablo can be accessed by vehicle from either the Danville area (Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard) or the Walnut Creek area (North Gate Road). Take Highway 680 to Danville, take Diablo Road exit, then 3 miles east to Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd.
