If you are looking for a Bay Area art museum with its finger on the pulse of the local art world, check out the San Jose Museum of Art. This contemporary art museum features 20th and 21st century works in a wide variety of media, and focuses on West Coast artists in particular. Exhibits at the San Jose Museum of Art have included the works of Robert Arneson, Milton Avery, Gregory Barsamian, Joan Brown, Deborah Butterfield, Enrique Chagoya, Dale Chihuly, Ron Davis, Jay DeFeo, Roy De Forest, Tony DeLap, Richard Diebenkorn, Jim Dine, Rupert Garcia, Philip Guston, Oliver Jackson, Hung Liu, Michael McMillen, Manuel Neri, Long Nguyen, Manuel Ocampo, Nathan Oliveira, Deborah Oropallo, Alan Rath, Raymond Saunders, Wayne Thiebaud, Bill Viola and William Wiley. Exhibitions and individual installations typically remain on view between 4 to 6 months and public tours are available for visitors at 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, as well as by appointment. Hands-on gallery activities such as "imagination stations" and reading galleries are suitable for children and are intended to make the artwork on view more engaging and accessible. As art museums go, however, this one may not keep the attention of kids who are not interested in art.
In 2007, the San Jose Museum of Art won the prestigious MUSE award from the American Association of Museums Technology Committee, and the museum presents itself as the leading institution dedicated to visual culture in Silicon Valley as well as the largest visual arts education provider in Santa Clara County.
The museum is located in the heart of downtown San Jose, at the corner of Market and San Fernando Streets and across the street from Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park.
