Come see objects of art and culture, which tell the story of the African Diaspora past and present!
Located inside St. Regis's new St. Regis Museum Tower, next to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the African Diaspora is dedicated to the histories of people of African origin and their influence and adaptation throughout the world. Focusing on their experience in North America, the Caribbean, and South America, the museum traces the history and legacy of the slave trade, and fights for freedom in the African continent and the New World. Visitors can enjoy exhibits on music of African influence or origin, and contemporary multicultural and multi-ethnic societies, as well as interactive theater and exhibitions such as "Celebrations: Rituals and Ceremony", "Culinary Traditions", and the "Freedom Theater".
Since the museum blends together art and innovative technology with the great African tradition of storytelling, visitors of all ages can enjoy exploring cultural traditions. Be sure to take advantage of guides who offer tours of the Museum and special exhibitions. And if you'd like to take home a souvenir, the museum store offers many handmade items made by local and global artisans.
To get to the Museum of the African Diaspora, using the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART): Exit on Montgomery St. Station or Powell St. Station, and walk towards Mission and Third Street.
