Spend an afternoon filled with science and feed your brain! Come and get hands-on with telescopes, computers and much more at the Lawrence Hall of Science.
The Lawrence Science Center is located in the hills above the Berkeley campus of the University of California and was established in honor of UC's first Nobel laureate.
The building, shown in the movie "THX 1138," is a modern concrete-and-glass structure perched on a cliff with a view of the East Bay below. Exhibits inside the museum feature hands-on activities for the whole family. Kids will get a kick out of "Big Dino's Return" and "Dinosaur Storytime." Other exhibits include "The Forces That Shape the Bay" outdoor science park, which explores seismological forces that affect the entire San Francisco Bay area, "The Real Astronomy Experience," where visitors get to use a telescope and interactive computer stations to track asteroids and explore Jupiter, and "Pheena the Fin Whale," a life sized model of a Fin whale. There is also a planetarium on site which offers public stargazing programs and live, interactive shows (approximately 45 minutes long). The Lawrence Hall of Science also has a great Nobel Prize display and a corner store with math and science take-homes for visitors.
To get here via AC Transit, take the #65 bus that runs hourly every day from the downtown Berkeley BART station to LHS and come with your thinking caps on and ready to learn!
