Stocked with an eclectic collection of American, Mesoamerican, and African art, and featuring a one-with-nature architectural design, de Young will mesmerize both lovers of art and the environment alike. Located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the collections at the de Young museum are rich and diverse. The museum boasts American decorative pieces, textiles, and paintings from the Rockefeller Collection of American Art, in addition to African and Oceanic collections. The museum courtyard features a sculptural installation by Andy Goldsworthy named Drawn Stone, and the building itself, located in the middle of an urban park, has a copper-clad exterior causing it to quickly oxidize to a greenish tone and match the building's natural environment. Kids will enjoy strolling in the Garden of Enchantment, and taking in the view from the top of the museum tower. Children are also invited to check out the free weekly Saturday Art Classes for 3 1/2- to 12-year-olds taught by professional artist-teachers - no reservations necessary. While here, be sure to enjoy lunch at the de Young café. Its menu is filled with delicious seasonal dishes created with fresh local ingredients from small family farmers and artisanal producers.

To get here, take the #44-O'Shaughnessy bus which stops near the front of the museum on Tea Garden Drive (southbound) and on Concourse Drive near the Academy of Sciences (northbound). Muni #5-Fulton and #21-Hayes stop at 8th and Fulton Streets, just outside of the park.
