Our Museum Expert Says:

One of San Francisco's most popular museums, the Exploratorium is a total sensory experience. With over 650 exhibits focusing on sea and insect life, computers, electricity, patterns and light, language, and the weather, this attraction is sure to offer fun for everyone.

Drawing over 500,000 people to visit each year, the Exploratorium was founded in 1969 by the physicist Dr. Frank Oppenheimer and is dedicated to teaching science through hands-on exhibits, which makes it a great stop-in spot when traveling with kids. The museum boasts exhibits such as the off-site Wave Organ, a unique sonic experience located on a nearby point of land jutting into San Francisco Bay, and the Tactile Dome (for which reservations are required), a three-dimensional pitch-black labyrinth that visitors navigate using their sense of touch. With all of the great exhibits, be sure to allow plenty of time to explore when planning your visit.

The Exploratorium has convenient access to public transportation, and is accessible by San Francisco Muni buses #30, #43, #28 and #29. Muni bus lines #22, #41 and #45 also stop in the vicinity. If you're taking BART, get off at the Montgomery Street station, walk one half-block up Market Street to Third Street and catch the #30 Stockton bus on the corner. This attraction is a wonderland for children and adults alike, so sharpen your senses and get ready to be stimulated!
