Our History Buff Says:

See the actual spot where the famous plunge took place in Hitchcock's Vertigo! From cannon-loading demonstrations to great historical exhibits, there's something for everyone to enjoy at Fort Point National Historic Site!

Due to its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point was originally built to protect the San Francisco harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. Fort Point survived and went on to achieve cinema immortality as the spot from which Kim Novak took her plunge into the San Francisco Bay in the Hitchcock classic Vertigo. Today, visitors can take in superb views of the Marin Headlands from beneath the anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoy 30 minute tours of this historic site. Guests should also make sure to visit the museum, which houses a collection of military memorabilia. Military buffs will love the Cannon Loading Demonstration and everyone can enjoy the award winning 30 minute video about the history of Fort Point, from 1776 through World War II. Be sure to check out exhibits "Building the Golden Gate Bridge" and "Ready & Forward" about the struggle of African-American soldiers in a society that had difficulties accepting them. In addition, "Women at War" and "The Lights of Fort Point" are interesting and educational as well.

To get to the Fort Point National Historic Site from San Francisco, take Highway 101 North and exit at the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and then turn left onto Lincoln Boulevard. Take your first left onto Long Avenue and then follow Long onto Marine Drive. Fort Point will be at the end. Enjoy the scenery at Fort Point—both inside the exhibit-filled museum and out!
