Our Nature Nut Says:

Steep Ravine is no doubt one of the most beautiful campgrounds along the California Coast. This highly scenic campground is located in Mount Tamalpais State Park, along Highway 1, north of San Francisco and south of Stinson Beach. Steep Ravine Campground is set on a high bluff above the Pacific Ocean. During daylight hours, ocean views are outstanding; and at night, the lights of the San Francisco skyline observed from Steep Ravine create another, more urban, but still spectacular view. A nice trail leads from the bluff to a beautiful sandy bay. And make sure to keep your eyes peeled – whales and other marine mammals often pop out of the water to say hello to those lucky enough to be watching!

Steep Ravine is an environmental campground. It is not suitable for motorhomes, and even cars may not enter the main part of the camp. Since sites are located rather far away from the parking lot – a few hundred feet – all gear should be carried in or packed in a wheelbarrow, available on site. Steep Ravine is a very small campground with only seven sites, most of them located under tree canopies along the bluff. All sites are secluded and relatively large, perfect for families, romantic getaways, or solo hikers who want peace and quiet.

Facilities in the campground include potable water, pit toilets, fire grills, and picnic tables. The campsite is open year round and since it is small and popular, guests are encouraged to make reservations months prior to their visit. Nine primitive cabins are also located on site and available for rent. These cabins provide a unique recreational experience and should be also booked well in advance. Have fun on your family vacation, your honeymoon, or your own personal soul-searching journey through California's Mt. Tamalpais!
