Our Botanical Gardens Expert Says:

One of San Francisco's newest attractions is the Yerba Buena Gardens, which is also home to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The Yerba Buena Gardens are home to the Esplanade Gardens, an outdoor park with benches and a great place for a picnic during the day. Located just to the northeast of the Esplanade Gardens is the Butterfly Garden, a scenic habitat for a grandiose assortment of butterflies. Just above the Esplanade Gardens is the Sister Cities Garden, which exhibits plants and flowers native to San Francisco's sister cities and, in addition, provides a spectacular overlook of downtown San Francisco. There's also the East Garden. The East Garden is of a Japanese design that is meant to embody elements of heaven, earth, and man. It has a quiet, somewhat secluded lawn with a fountain and a performance area, which occasionally showcases Japanese-style performances in the afternoons.
