Sea Kayaking and Canoeing in San Francisco Bay Area, Carmel, Central CA

Things to do / Travel Guide

Kayaking and Paddling around the San Francisco Bay Area

Kayaking around the San Francisco Bay Area is a great way to get a new perspective on the city. Many kayaking and paddling outfitters are scattered around the city of Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Various paddling and kayaking tours of Angel Island, Alcatraz Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge are available. Many of these kayaking tours are suitable for everyone, even kids, and do not require any previous paddling or kayaking experience. Prices, in general, range from about $65-$75 for adults to around $30 for kids.

Kayaking and Paddling around Morro Bay, California

Morro Bay is a great place to put your oars in the water. Kayaks and canoes can be rented from local kayak outfitters for sometimes as little as $5 per person for every half an hour or roughly $20 per half day.

Kayaking and Paddling around Monterey Bay, California

Another spot along the central California coastline that is known for kayaking, as well as other water-based activities, is Monterey Bay. Head down to Monterey Bay where open and closed kayaks can be rented for as little as $25 a day. Kayakers, from beginners to experts, can take courses and then head out on a three-hour kayaking tour for a price of around $50 per person.

Kayaking and Paddling around Big Sur, California

However the real “crown jewel” in terms of kayaking in this region is along the rugged coastline of Big Sur. Kayaking Big Sur is an epically exotic adventure punctuated by steep, tree-topped peaks and breathtaking, panoramic views. The Big Sur coastline is relatively unspoiled and has changed very little since the first European explorers sailed here centuries ago. This 90 miles of virtually untouched coastline has remained almost completely undeveloped, thus preserving the environmental health and biodiversity of this unique area.
Kayaking is one of the best ways to take in all of the scenic wonder that Big Sur has to offer and is also one of the best ways to take a gander at sea otters, migrating whales, and endangered California condors. An important note that is worth making; paddlers and kayakers who wish to conquer the waters of Big Sur, especially those along the Pacific Coast, must be comfortable kayaking in moderate swells and in 10-15 knot winds.
