Things to do / Travel Guide
The central California coast region encompasses the area from Marin County in the north down to Pismo Beach in the south. If you plan to drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (and we highly recommend that you do) the trip from Marin County to Pismo Beach is roughly 300 miles and should take you a minimum of seven hours to drive. While traveling south from Marin County along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) you will cross the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco. After leaving San Francisco you will pass by Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Big Sur, San Simeon, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, and finally, Pismo Beach.
The northern part of this region also encompasses the famous wine country of Sonoma County and Napa Valley. Sonoma County is just west of the Napa Valley and north of Marin County and San Francisco. Napa Valley, on the other hand, is east of Sonoma County and borders the San Pablo Bay to the south. California's wine country is typified by rolling hills and is partitioned by small ranges that crisscross the area.
The region is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean while on the east the Diablo and Temblor Ranges separate the region from California's central valley.
