Things to do / Travel Guide
As a coastal area, the central California coast region can be enjoyed from the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, there are many places from one end of the Golden State to another that are home to a plethora of pleasure boating opportunities; especially in the San Francisco Bay Area and on the Monterey Peninsula. Prices for a boat trip range from as little as $15 to as much as $70 per person.
Pleasure Boating around San Francisco
Boating around San Francisco is one of the best ways to get great views of various iconic images throughout the city, such as Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. Many boat operators offer tours of the Bay Area and can be found in abundance along the Fisherman's Wharf and nearby marina. Also, there are daily excursions and tours via boat from the Fisherman's Wharf out to Alcatraz Island. Some boat tour operators offer specific-themed tours of Alcatraz Island, such as a ghost tour. Basic tours usually cost around $25 per person while more elaborate tours, such as a tour of San Francisco combined with a boating excursion to Alcatraz Island, might run as high as $70 per person.
Pleasure Boating around Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay
It's also possible to rent boats in Santa Cruz at the Municipal Wharf. If you want to go out for a day of fishing, outfitters in the area will hook you up with everything you need to reel in the big one. If you want to go sailing and you've got some experience under your belt, try renting a yacht in at the Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey. Half-day rentals start at around $150 and go up from there depending on the size of the boat.
Pleasure Boating around Morro Bay
Boating opportunities in the central coastal area of California can be found in Morro Bay. From May-September you will find boats taking guests on a one-hour tour of the local coast for as little as $10 per person. Also from Morro Bay, visitors can check out the “Seaview,” a semi-submarine that “plies the waters daily” for less than $15 per person.
