Our Shopping Expert Says:
When did Apollo Plaza in Monticello close? The answer is 2003, so you are about a decade late if you were planning a trip to check out the latest sales. Anyway, it was a pretty small operation to start with and in a bad location. Oh Well. As new life comes to Monticello, including a new exit on the Route 17 Quickway (soon to be I-86) there are some plans to restore the site as a local shopping destination. We wish Monticello luck and the market is certainly there.
New Yorkers of all races and religions love heading up to the "mountains" for the shopping as much as for the fresh air and scenic views. And Monticello has traditionally been the center of the area. Competition is tough and shoppers should understand that even though Apollo Plaza Manufacturers Outlets Center is long gone, some of the busiest outlet centers in the country are nearby. One that especially comes to mind is Woodbury Commons, less than 45 minutes towards the city on Route 17. You will pass the Galleria at Crystal Run about halfway to Woodbury Commons if you are looking for a regional center mall rather than an outlet mall. OR, you can forgo the shopping and head to the Upper Delaware River for some rafting or take in the views in the Catskill Park - hey you didn't leave the city just to go shopping? Or did you?
