Unfortunately, the Hudson Valley Children's Museum is closed, even though some websites would have you believe that Hudson Valley Children are flocking to this Nyack, NY attraction. Kids and their parents should not despair – there is a good children's museum in nearby Poughkeepsie, New York. The Mid-Hudson Children's Museum is considered one of the best museums in the Hudson Valley and kids love the hands-on exhibits. Kids (and their parents) will get a good understanding of how the Hudson River tides work. Remember, the Hudson is not a river – it is a tidal estuary and a few minutes in the museum will show you just what that means. Kids enjoy the simulated dive in the yellow submarine to the bottom of the Hudson. Local inventor, Samuel Morse is honored with an exhibit showing kids how people communicated long before texting and Facebook. Other exhibits teach kids about the human body, geography, gravity and the work of Leonardo Da Vinci. Hats off to IBM for helping fund this museum in its backyard.
If you go, Poughkeepsie is about 60 miles north of Nyack on the east side of the Hudson River. The Mid-Hudson Children's Museum is open weekdays from 9:30 AM and on weekends from 11:00 AM. The museum is closed on Mondays and closes every day at 5:00 PM. Admission is $7.50 for kids and adults. Exhibits are geared mainly at the below-ten set, with activities for toddlers, as well.
