Our History Buff Says:

See one of the finest of the lavish estates built by wealthy 19th-century industrialists along the Hudson River! The epitome of the Gilded Age's nouveau riche, the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site illustrates the changes in American culture with industrialization in the years after the Civil War.

Modeled after the English country house, Frederick William Vanderbilt's 54-room country palace in Hyde Park, built in 1898, is one of the first steel-framed houses in the U.S., and at 55,000 square feet, was actually the smallest and least expensive of the famed Vanderbilt mansions. Decorated in grand French style, the mansion is located on a beautiful spot on the Hudson and is both a historic home to visit and a great picnic spot for those who live in the area. The grounds are filled with flower gardens that visitors can stroll through in the spring and summer. In addition to a tour of the house, be sure to explore the 211 acres of park land that boast centuries old tree plantings, stunning Hudson River and Catskill Mountain views and Italian Gardens. If the history of wealthy New Yorkers is your thing, plan to spend a whole day at the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt National Historic Sites and enjoy the restaurants, historic sites and cultural activities offered by the area's communities too.

Vanderbilt Mansion is on Route 9 in Hyde Park in the Hudson River Valley, Dutchess County, New York, about a 90 mile drive north of New York City and 70 miles south of Albany. Have fun at this important piece of U.S. financial history!
