Visit the home of four generations of the Rockefeller family at Kykuit in Mt. Pleasant, New York. Also known as the John D. Rockefeller Estate, Kykuit, which means "lookout" in Dutch, is built in Pocantico Hills, the highest point of the area near North Tarrytown. Kykuit is home to a variety of tours of the magnificent estate.
When Kykuit was built in 1913, John D. Rockefeller was the richest man in the world. Kykuit, with a 250-acre section of the Rockefeller family estate, was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the Classical Revival Georgian style. Kykuit, a six-story mansion with an outstanding collection of Chinese and European ceramics, fine furnishings and 20th century art, opened for public tours in 1979 upon the death of the then-current occupant, Nelson Rockefeller.
Today, there are five tours available at Kykuit. Depending on their interest, visitors to Kykuit can choose to go on the House and Inner Garden Tour; the Gardens and Sculpture Tour; the in-depth Grand Tour; the Estate Life Tour and the Time Saver Tour. Each of the fascinating tours lasts between two and three hours. Tours of Kykuit begin at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow. After their tour, visitors to Kykuit can find plenty of food options within easy walking distance, ranging from Chinese to pizza.
To get to Kykuit, take I-95 north to exit 1Cthen take I-87 north toward Albany, then take exit 9 toward US-9, turn left onto White Plains Road, then right onto US-9 and drive until Philipsburg Manor at 381 North Broadway.
