Things to do / Travel Guide
The whole region of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley is studded with vast state parks, often containing recreational areas. Where there isn't a state park, there are still rolling grassy hills in the Hudson Valley and peaceful mountaintops where you can let their kids run to their heart's content. The region as a whole is an excellent place for the family to go to escape the big city, stretch the legs, and have a picnic.
There are picnic grounds scattered throughout Harriman State Park and neighboring Bear Mountain State Park. Located just a little northwest of the Tappan Zee Bridge on the western side, these parks have seven fine lakes for public use, and nearly every one of them offers opportunities for picnicking and recreation. Particularly nice is the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, which you can get to by taking Exit 17 from the Palisades Interstate Parkway. You can eat in view of the wild and thought-provoking sculptures at Storm King Art Center, or in view of the Hudson River at the Hudson Highlands State Park. In the Catskills, the picnic areas are closer to the Hudson. One merely has to drive a few miles in any direction on any of the major roads and highways and you will find a turnoff to a pleasant park area.
