- Contrary to popular lore, the original Woodstock Music and Art Festival in 1969 didn't take place in Woodstock. It was moved at the last minute to Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, on the other side of the region.
- The estate called Kykuit, in Tarrytown, was built for the Rockefellers: John D. Rockefeller, owner of the estate, was at his height (and in today's dollars) worth more than Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and Sam Walton put together. No kidding!
- At the base of Kaaterskill Falls you can tell that people have been visiting for years and years - there is still graffiti there from the early 19th century.
- The Mohonk Mountain House and Reserve was used for the filming of the 1990s movie “The Road to Wellville,” starring Matthew Broderick and Anthony Hopkins.
- The world's largest kaleidoscope is located in Shandaken, in the Catskills. The kaleidoscope is 37 feet tall and 50 feet across, and people inside at the base can watch all the 254 hexagonal images dance together.
- Here's a partial list of the entertainers that either got their start in the Catskills, or performed there regularly: Mel Brooks, Shelley Berman, Lenny Bruce, George Burns, Sid Caesar, Jack Carter, Rodney Dangerfield, Danny Kaye, Jerry Lewis, Jackie Mason, Don Rickles, and Joan Rivers.
- The Catskills summer resort scene (and keep in mind that this scene was actually only in the Catskills' foothills to the south of Catskill Park) has served as the backdrop for many a movie: Dirty Dancing of course is the most famous, but there are also dramas such as Sweet Lorraine and A Walk on the Moon.
