Things to do / Travel Guide
There are lots of ways to experience the water in the Catskills and the Hudson Valley region, either on the river itself or on mountain lakes.
Hudson River Sailing
There are a few companies that lead sailing expeditions on the Hudson River. Hudson Sailing in Stone Ridge (Ulster County) offers half- and full-day private charters, while River Boat Tours from Poughkeepsie offers excursions on a paddleboat, replete with lunches and wine tasting.
Hudson River Motorboat Cruises
There are a number of companies offering various fantastic cruises along the Hudson. You can choose a departure from Upper Nyack, Haverstraw, Newburgh Landing, in Newburgh, Rondout Landing, in Kingston, or even New York City and Albany, outside the region. Attractions and stops along the way include West Point, Bannerman's Island, Constitution Island, Highland Falls, and others. There's a wide variety of ships, environments and ambiances, and of course prices. Usually the Hudson River cruise season lasts from April or May through October.
Boating on Catskill and Shawangunk Lakes
A beautiful place to take your boat or rent one on-site is the North-South Lakes, where the old Catskill Mountain House once stood. These smallish lakes are contiguous and share the same waters, and boat rental is available. Reach the lakes by taking State Road 23A in the Catskills to North Lake Road. From the turn-off to a parking area is just a few miles.
The lake at the Shawangunk resort, the Mohonk Mountain House, is particularly famous for its beautiful views of the resorts architecture, and the surrounding mountains - both of which are stunning. As for motorboats, there are several cruises offered at different spots along the Hudson River that go on two- to three-hour outings.
