Fort Foote, one of the region's best preserved forts, played a crucial role protecting the Washington DC area and the ports of Alexandria, Georgetown, and Washington during the Civil War. The fort was completed in 1863 and was active until 1878. Two 15-inch Rodman guns still remain on display at the site. Various exhibits are located around the fort to help visitors learn about the monument's national significance. The park is open only during daylight hours and has limited accessibility.
