Our Museum Expert Says:

Welcome aboard the USS constellation! The USS Constellation was the very last all-sail warship built by the US navy, and is now stationed as a floating museum in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Visit the ship to get an idea of how our brave sailors lived, fought, and died, in the last Civil War era ship still afloat.

There's something for all ages in the USS Constellation Museum! Children six years old and up can enjoy the Powder Monkey tour, where they can learn about the lives of the young "powder monkeys" who served aboard warships of the time. Kids can watch demonstrations and participate in fun hands-on activities.

If you want to learn a little more about our country's rich culturally diverse heritage, you can join the Black Sailors in Navy Blue Tour. This tour explores the lives of the tens of thousands of brave African American sailors who fought in the Civil War. Did you know that by the end of the civil War over 20 percent of Union enlistments were soldiers of African American descent? During Black History Month, every February, tours are scheduled every Saturday and Sunday.

For the more technically minded, the Ship-as-a-Machine Tour is designed to answer all your questions! Basic shipbuilding and sailing questions are asked and answered. Find out how sails work, what makes a rudder turn a ship, and find out what the difference was between 19th century warships and merchant ships. Avast!
