Explore one of the finest art collections in the country and even the world! From classic paintings and works on paper, to photographs, the decorative arts, and a garden of sculptures, the National Gallery of Art is simply second to none.
The National Gallery was created for the people of the United States of America by a joint resolution of Congress and funded through the largesse of art collector Andrew W. Mellon in 1937. The museum was established with more than 2,000 sculptures, paintings, decorative art, and porcelains and, at the time of its inception, was the largest marble structure in the world. The National Gallery of Art boasts an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures ranging from the medieval period through the late 19th century, as well as pre-20th century works by American artists with highlights by Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh, and da Vinci. The onsite Art Sculpture Garden provides an incredible outdoor setting for the display of a number of pieces from the contemporary sculpture collection. Beyond the displays, however, The National Gallery is very interactive, hosting films and plenty of special events for kids.
There's plenty of available public transportation to reach the Gallery. The nearest Metro stops are Judiciary Square on the Red Line, Archives on the Yellow/Green Lines, and Smithsonian on the Blue/Orange Lines and Metro bus stops are located on 4th Street and 7th Street NW. Should you get hungry while here, the Cascade Café, with its view of the cascade waterfall, offers great soups, salads, specialty entrées, wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, and fresh-baked desserts, so come spend the day!
