Our Museum Expert Says:

In 1844, a scholarly group of Marylanders took it upon themselves to collect the manuscripts, books, paintings, furniture and more as a way of preserving the great state's heritage. These objects, now showcased at the Maryland Historical Society, bring Maryland's past to life and foretell the role of the state as a part of the nation's history.

The Maryland Historical Society's Museum has an amazing collection of treasures from 18th and 19th-century paintings and silver to 20th century everyday objects, and are all housed in this three story museum. The Carey Center for Maryland Life showcases special exhibits such as "Looking for Liberty: An Overview of Maryland History", "Maryland Through the Artist's Eye", "Furniture in Maryland Life" and "Baltimore Ablaze".

With over 300,000 objects and 2,000 paintings including other items such as quilts, costumes, glass, dolls, toys and sport memorabilia, Maryland's oldest cultural institution truly showcases the state's diverse heritage, culture and history.

The Museum Shop and Bookstore sells a changing variety of treasures including works from Maryland artists, craftsmen, and writers. You can also find heirloom silver, china, vintage clothing and other collectibles. This shop is definitely the place to find that special Maryland gift.
