Encompassing 90,000 works of art, the Baltimore Museum of Art is a wonderland of artwork that spans genres, time and geography. From abstract and minimalist sculpture to pop art and Pacific Island art, this Museum has a permanent collection which will satisfy all who visit.
The Baltimore Museum of Art is known for its Cone collection, compiled by Claribel and Etta Cone in the early 20th century. The Cones acquired as much as they could of the work of artists such as Matisse and Picasso as well as Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Renoir. Today, the Museum boasts the largest holding of Matisse in the world. They also have an internationally renowned collection of prints, drawings, and photographs from the 15th century to the present. In addition to European masterpieces, the BMA is home to American paintings and sculpture and boasts one of the most important African collections in the country. There are also collections of art from the Ancient Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. On Sundays, kids and their parents can enjoy sketching tours, hands-on workshops, and gallery tours designed specially for families. Kids will also enjoy the BMA's Sculpture Gardens, which feature a 100-year survey of modern and contemporary sculpture on nearly three landscaped acres in the heart of the city.
Admission is free every day, as are guided tours led by BMA Docents on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The BMA is conveniently located near Maryland Transit Administration bus lines (Nos. 3 and 11). Be sure to check out Gertrude's restaurant for a bite to eat while here, to top off a wonderful, art-filled afternoon at the fabulous Baltimore Museum of Art.
