Enjoy a breathtaking view of America's capital at the Old Post Office Tower in Washington, D.C., the third tallest structure in the District of Columbia and the last example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The Old Post Office Tower offers ranger-guided tours, culminating in the 270 foot-high observation deck.
When the construction of the Old Post Office Tower was completed in 1899, it was the largest structure and the first steel building in Washington, D.C. After only 15 years, the structure was already considered "old," prompting many to actively seek its demolition and replace it with a newer building. However, The Great Depression made funds unavailable for the demolition of the tower, and local citizens grew to admire the building's architecture. Even though demolition permits and money were available in 1970 and 1971, the Old Post Office Tower was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1973.
The 270-foot observation deck at the Old Post Office Tower also includes an exhibit relating to the building's struggle against demolition. The Old Post Office Tower also houses several retail stores and a food court with a wide variety of restaurants, including Middle Eastern cuisine and deli.
To get to the Old Post Office Tower, take the Blue Line Metro train to the Federal Triangle Metro Station.
