Journey through parks beyond the nation's capital at the National Capital Parks-East, a multi-unit park of the National Capital Region that spreads from Capitol Hill to the Maryland suburbs. National Capital Parks-East is comprised of 13 park sites, parkways and statuary covering more than 8,000 acres of historic, cultural, and recreational parklands, including Anacostia Park, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, and Piscataway Park.
Elements of National Capital Parks-East have been federally owned and administered since 1790. In 1933, National Capital Parks-East was officially transferred to the control of the National Park Service. Until 1965, National Capital Parks-East and other parks in Washington were known collectively as the National Capital Parks, though today, the National Park Service operates several park groupings in the Washington area, including National Capital Parks-East, Rock Creek Park, President's Park, and others.
National Capital Parks-East provides fun and educational activities in all its parks, including cow milking at Oxon Hill farm, visiting an urban oasis at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, viewing artifacts at Fort Washington Park's museum, and touring the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. So whether you like to hike, relax, or learn, there's something for all the family to enjoy. After an exciting day at National Capital Parks-East, visitors can find hundreds of restaurants in the Washington area, with everything from seafood to Chinese cuisine.
To get to Anacostia Park, considered the entrance to National Capital Parks-East, take I-495, then turn north onto Indian Head Highway, then west onto Good Hope Street Southeast.
Visit National Capital Parks-East and get a sampling of what Maryland and the eastern side of Washington have to offer.
