Our History Buff Says:

Rejuvenate the spirit at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac in Washington, D.C., a memorial commemorating the life of Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States. The 17-acre memorial, established shortly after Johnson's death in 1973, offers visitors the opportunity for beautiful sightseeing and tranquil reflection.

Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Lyndon B. Johnson became president, and in 1964 was elected to his first official term as president, but served only one term, returning to civilian life in 1969. After his death in 1973, Congress authorized the creation of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac, and the site was dedicated on September 27, 1974.

Today, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove on the Potomac contains two sections. The commemorative section of the memorial contains a monolith made of Texas granite surrounded by serpentine paths and walkways. The second section contains trails shaded by hundreds of white pine and dogwood trees, framed by azaleas and rhododendron. The memorial overlooks the Potomac River vista of Washington. After a visit to the memorial, visitors can find a variety of eateries in downtown Washington, D.C., offering everything from Mexican cuisine to Irish pubs.
